Commissioning more devices then limit

Depending on your software version and the limit there you will have to devide you site.

From software version 3.1.35 the limit of devices in a Cluster has changed.

  • If you have software version 3.1.34 or lower the limit of 25 devices applies.

  • If you have software version 3.1.35 or higher the limit is changed to 400 devices.

In this article we will take a look on how to prepare to a commissioning of a big site - which has over 25 Vertexes.
Before commissioning a big site like this we recomend reading these articles:

Why is there a limit on devices different depending on software version and how will that impact my commissioning?

Netconfig can send out a limited amout of messages that it can send. This limitation has been changed in the 3.1.35 software update. If you want to use this on new site you need to update only one Vertex to higher software version and then use Netconfig with higher limit.

There are two ways to commission a big site, with many Vertexes:

  • using LAN - this option is always available, but it will include more footwork.

  • using VLAN - this option is available if your network provider can set up seperate networks for you.

LAN network

When working with a LAN network while using Netconfig the Vertex amount restriction will mean that your site will need to be commissioned in sections. Let’s take a look at an example:

This site has a very big first and second floor which will each have a cluster containing limit of Vertexes and a smaller third floor with a Cluster containing 20 Vertexes.

To commission this site you will have to make sure that only one floor at a time has Vertexes connected to the network.

So first you connect all Vertexes on the first floor to the network and use netconfig. Now you will have to unplug them from the network.

Work in this loop until you have finished commisioning all floors.

VLAN network

To commission your site using VLAN networks ask your network provider to create seperate VLAN networks for different sections of the site you are commissioning. Each VLAN network will need to have at least as many addresses as you have Vertexes.

Let’s take a look how commissioning of the same building as before will look like using VLAN networks.

Each floor in this building will need a seperate VLAN network. Once they are up you can connect all the Vertexes to the network.

When you will be using netconfig using different VLAN networks you will be able to use netconfig on different Vertexes.

When you update the Vertexes to higher software version on a commissioned site and want to merge all devices to one Cluster make sure to create backups of all flows in NodeRed. They may be deleted when clicking deploy in any flow.
